If your young child has trouble holding scissors correctly you may want to see if you can find these by Fiskars. Elliya's teacher let her use them at the beginning of the school and it really helped.

these are awesome!
other scissor tips: let her use a spray bottle to 'mist' your plants- it strengthens that finger. Also,let her practice cutting playdough. Again, it lets her develop those fingers without worry about the precision paper takes.
I know you're a teacher, and probably know this, but just in case ;)
